Data Science Society is UC Berkeley's first student-run, not-for-profit organization focused on data science and its interdisciplinary applications. Since our founding in 2016, we have united students from a wide range of disciplines behind our shared passion for all things data. Our mission is to foster a strong data science community on campus by advocating data science education and practice through our various committees and internal and external programs. Our educational and consulting initiatives have impacted hundreds of students in a variety of majors across campus and given them the technical and soft skills needed to thrive in a data-first world.
Each semester we focus on developing educational learning experiences through our technical workshops and 2-unit DeCal course to further our data science cause on campus. We host professional events for students to connect with industry leaders and grow their network, and conduct analytics consulting projects with startups and Fortune 500s. Our General Membership program provides over a hundred students each semester with access to technical workshops and mentorship, whilst encouraging them to work in teams on a group project with a tangible impact. We aim to build an inclusive and accessible community where students of all levels and backgrounds can dive into the world of data science and take advantage of all opportunities in this data-driven day and age.
The academic development committee hosts a variety of educational workshops open to all skill levels and students, and directs our General Membership program that is open to students from all backgrounds. We take pride in educating our peers and spreading information and excitement about contemporary data science advancements and opportunities throughout the Cal community.
The consulting committee works with top tech companies on analytics-based consulting projects. Our past clients include Yahoo!, Amazon, Google, Paypal, and Venmo. We work with our clients to enrich their data processing procedures and add business value to their data pipelines by applying machine learning techniques to derive insights.
The DeCal committee runs our 2-unit DeCal, Essential Tools for Data Scientists, which helps students build fundamental data science skills to thrive in the professional world. There are absolutely no hard pre-requisites and students of all majors, years, and backgrounds are actively encouraged to participate! This semester's offering is on Mondays from 6:30 - 8:30 PM in Moffit 105.
